7 Alternatives To Owning A Car

There is a large segment of the population who is reconsidering car ownership as a whole, or cutting down on the number of cars that they own as a household. Here are 7 alternatives to consider either to eliminate car ownership, or to cut the number of cars in your household down to one.

1. The ZipCar

The ZipCar is available in many urban centers and highly populated cities throughout the United States and is a viable option to owning a car full time. You basically time-share cars that are strategically placed around the urban center. (more…)

24 Hours of LeMons 2008: Part III - The build

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Tinkerbell Rosso build-up

Not to be confused with the "24 Hours of LeMans" (that zooty French endurance race), the "24 Hours of LeMons" is an event comprised of low-budget $500 race cars, i.e. lemons. The so-called "crap-car enduro" has enticed various members of the Autoblog team over the years into covering, and more recently participating, in the event. When asked to join Team Tinkerbell Rosso for an upcoming race, we knew it was our obligation to go. We now find ourselves booked for the "Thunderhill Arse-Freeze-Apalooza." The event, scheduled during the last few days of December, promises dreadfully cold weather, but plenty of off-beat racing fun. Our six-part weekly series will take you behind the scenes with our new race partners, the "Tinkerbell Rosso" racing team and their 1996 Crown Victoria "Police Interceptor."

Our earlier blogs (Part I - The donor vehicle and Part II - The teardown) introduced you to the car. Now, the team is hard at work turning the former taxi/police interceptor into a race car. The madness begins after the jump.

Eleven Ways The UAW Is Like Congress [Carpocalypse Now]

So we're sitting here in the press room of the LA Auto Show thinking about Carpocalypse Now, the fight for loans from Congress and thinking to ourselves — you know the UAW and Congress? They're really not so different from each other. It's almost like looking in a mirror. A freaky state fair carnival mirror, but a mirror nonetheless. Here's our list of the top eleven similarities between these two seemingly disparate groups.

1.) Both carry a bunch of signs at all their get-togethers. UAW workers, picket signs. Congressmen, re-election signs.
2.) Both have exorbitant pensions and will receive health care for life upon retirement.
3.) Both have work stoppages for months at a time during summer, winter and around all federal holidays.
4.) Both take credit for creating the middle class.
5.) Both have a historical reputation for shoddy quality of work product.
6.) Both like pork. One likes it in "rind" form, the other in "spending" form.
7.) Both live well beyond their means. UAW workers with boats on Lake Superior. Congress gets junkets and fact-finding trips to the Cayman Islands.
8.) Both are paid the same regardless of how much work they do.
9.) Both have a national approval rating of under 10%.
10.) Both are seemingly out-classed by their foreign counterparts.
11.) Both get to take election day off.

See, there you have it, they're like ebony and ivory — and really, they've got to figure out a way to live together in perfect harmony.

Bunny Hop!

We heard about the crazy contact that happened while Ryan Tuerck and Katsuhiro Ueo were battling during Formula D  Vegas, but this is the best footage we’ve seen of it. Apparently, Tureck was just inches from Ueo when he jammed on the brakes, and the resulting collision caused all four wheels of his Pontiac Solstice to leave the ground. In the post-run interview, Tuerck tells commentator Miki Taka the car jumped four feet in the air, and while it looks closer to two feet, it must have felt pretty wild.

Since their split with GM, Saab had promised to take a more Scandinavian direction with their new 2010 9-5. This new version features a new all-turbocharged powertrain and beefy styling. With a wide choice of engine options and all the other new features this year, we think this might end up being the year of the Saab.
