Shelby CS 6 Mustang: Efficient Performance

Mustang CS 6
Shelby Mustang CS 6

Carroll Shelby is known for among other things, building really fast cars.  Soon, he may also essentially the inspiration behind the production of a new twin turbo Mustang.  Not only would a twin turbo V6 Mustang be faster than the current V8 GT, but it would be lighter and more fuel efficient.  In fact, if you want a Mustang that is all of those things, you can have it right now.  It’s called the CS 6.

V6 turbo: Who wants to call this whimpy?

In 1965, Carroll Shelby began fitting Paxton Superchargers to his GT350. Only eleven Paxton supercharger kits were installed at the Shelby factory but a number of additional kits were sold to customers to retro-fit on their Mustangs.  Current Mustang owners can get a modern Paxton NOVI-1200 Supercharger installed on their Mustange and reap the 350+ horsepower
reward.  Stock V6 Mustangs have about 210 horsepower.

Black CS 6

If you want to completely convert your Mustang into a “Shelby CS 6″ there are additional upgrades available including: custom hood, brakes, 20″ wheels, Shelby body kit, and dual exhaust.  Because the Supercharger only pumps out the power when it is needed, you can enjoy the added fuel efficiency of a V6 for everyday driving while producing more horsepower than a V8 if you decide to drop the hammer.  All of this for about the price of a GT.

2010 is the likely date for when a twin-turbo V6 may be introduced in new Mustangs.  The engine will be Ford’s new EcoBoost V6, currently in use on the 2009 Lincoln MKS.  Ford’s EcoBoost will also be used in the new Ford Flex and Explorers.  Standard motors will be a 275HP 2.0L I-4 with the more powerful V-6 3.5L as an option in the Mustang.  The result of using smaller engines with superchargers is a substantial increase in fuel efficiency without any sacrifice in performance.   What this translates to is the ability to have a high-performing Mustang, without the low fuel mileage of the V-8.   The 3.5L makes somewhere in the range of 340hp, as compared to the 300 horses of current GT models. It also weighs 150lbs less overall and gets 20% better fuel mileage than the current V6.

V8 purists will probably lament the addition of a twin turbo V6 as if you were spitting on Steve McQueen’s grave.  But let’s get real.  Gas isn’t going to get any cheaper and American car companies need to commit to designing and building smarter sports cars not just brutish horsepower and gas hogs.  The technology is already there for both efficiency and performance; Shelby has been doing it for 40 years.

The 2010 Lincoln MKT: We Don’t Hate It…

2010 Lincoln MKT
2010 Lincoln MKT

On Friday, Ford gave the official green light for production of the 2010 Lincoln MKT, Ford Motor Company’s luxury crossover vehicle. Developed under the codename “D472″, the Lincoln MKT was originally introduced in January at the 2008 North American International Auto Show as a Ford Taurus/Lincoln MKS/Volvo S80 inspired concept vehicle. In the fall of 2009, the Lincoln MKT vision will become a reality when 2010 models hit dealer floors.

In the midst of several rapid, major changes within its parent company, the Lincoln MKT is rumored to represent Ford’s commitment to revamping and re-marketing their Lincoln and Mercury lines. No longer in direct competition with Cadillac, the Lincoln MKT is intended to stand up next to similar luxury vehicles like the Acura MDX and the Audi Q7. Featuring the trademark Continental grill, the most notable of the new Lincoln MKT’s features is its V6 EcoBoost engine whose fuel efficient technology is expected to result in a 15% higher average mpg rating. The V6 EcoBoost, which engineered to run on either regular gasoline or E85 ethanol, boasts an impressive 415-hp and 400lb-ft of torque - working out to about 118 hp-per-liter. Offered with a 6-sp automatic transmission with select-shift AWD, the Lincoln MKT is intended to provide the perfect combination between “the comfort of a luxury sedan, the spaciousness and flexibility of a full-size utility and the performance of a sporty roadster.”

2010 Shelby GT500 [Spy Photos]

It was only a few weeks ago we brought you the reveal of the 2010 Ford Mustang, and today, we're the first to bring you the almost totally undisguised shots of the 2010 Shelby GT500 convertible, because we're the ones who took 'em.

In what is the clearest proof yet that paying attention to your rear view mirrors pays dividends, we noticed this virtually uncamouflaged Shelby GT500 sidle up next to us in the left turn lane at a stoplight in the snowy Detroit suburb of Royal Oak. When you live in Detroit and you write about cars, you have a camera in the car at all times, and since the guy was caught in traffic, the photographic onslaught was on.

We did our best to give chase but there was no way to do it safely, with the super-Shelbyfied 'stang taking off on a left turn faster than we could figure out where he took off too. We're imagining he called in the transport truck and disappeared Spy Hunter style. In any case, the new GT500 shares a lot of the styling elements of the current car with double vents on the hood, a huge aggressive upper and lower grille plus the not-so-subtle stripes on the hood.

What's new is the smoothly styled rear spoiler which compliments the new back-end. Check out those stylish new wheels. Pretty cool looking, huh? But what does it sound like? Sounds a lot like the current one, nice throaty exhaust with a tinge of cockle-stirring supercharger whine. We expect the new GT500 to drop at the Detroit Auto Show in January and yes, we'll be there to see it live.

Massive Secret Mustang Junkyard Found In Rhode Island Forest [Secret Garden]

Imagine a secret junkyard frozen in time somewhere around the 70's with every bit of vintage hardware stretching for hundreds of acres. Classic Mustangs, Camaros, Cadillacs, Hemis; you name it, it's here. But not for long: The law man's saying to crush 'em. Massive mega-gallery below along with the location and what you can do to save them.

Rhode Island authorities have ordered this illicit junkyard crushed immediately, but such an undertaking takes time. Word says that these cars are slowly marching towards the fateful crusher, but there is hope. The owner goes by the name of JR and he's willing to make a deal. For the address, you've gotta swear to not go trampling around this guy's backyard without his permission. That's uncool to start, but what's more, you might be on the receiving end of a rock salt salvo. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Now that we've got that out of the way, this dream junkyard can be found here, which is in the forests of Rhode Island. If any readers decide to purchase some vintage iron from said junkyard, drop us a few pictures at tips@jalopnik.com. Happy hunting. Hat tip to Zack!

Ford Announces for 2010: One Focus, One World

eurofordfocus.jpg picture by willfusion

Upon the release of the new North American (NA) Ford Focus there have been many industry writers complaining (or was it just me?) about the failure in its cosmetic design. Particularly when you compare the NA version of the Focus to the European Ford Focus that trumps it hands down. Well it seems as though all that complaining has reached its intended purpose, or else the decision is just part of Ford’s plan to reach global integration with their line-up and reduce costs… either way Ford President Alan Mulally has announced that the next Ford Focus in 2010 will be a global design. Thus, there will be one Focus for one world.

The only concern about the “One Focus, One World” ideation is which design team is going to be in charge of the next Ford Focus? We have seen what the North American design teams for the Ford Focus have produced and it is most unimpressive. Sure the added safety features and the Sync system are great, but there is no curbside appeal. (more…)

Ford/GM post 2nd Quarter Profits, yet both restructurings have a long way to go

Logo06 aeFord

As quarterly reports began to emerge at the end of the second quarter we see that both Ford and GM posted positive numbers. For GM it was their third profitable quarter in a row, while Fords second quarter profits came as a mildly pleasing surprise to market anaylists.

Both Ford and GM are still deep in their individual restructuring schedules that have resulted in numerous plant closings and early retirements. The process is expected to take time as shedding the gluttony of decades past is a messy business, and the recovery from such system shocks requires patience.
GM’s profits ($891 million for the 2nd quarter) are credited to their strength in foreign markets and their cut-back in fleet sales and less incentive spending, which have helped to retain a higher sales value. The improved sales value of their cars is helping to off-set the lower sales figures of their truck/SUV division; the bread and butter of profits in the 1990’s and earlier this decade.
Fords profit shocker ($750 million for the 2nd quarter) has a lot to do with the sale of Austin Martin and was aided by a cut-back similar to GM’s in fleet sales. While no one with Ford is under the impression that they are out of the water, it does give some credence to the path they have taken.

The next hurdle ahead of Ford and GM is the contract negotiations that are underway with the United Auto Workers Union (UAW). If Detroit is to compete with the Asian and European auto manufacturers they will need the UAW to come down to an equitable level. And if the UAW wants to continue working in the automotive industry some concessions will be necessary.

Ford and GM are reshaping the way America builds cars, but it is still to early to prognosticate what that shape will be.
