Making Good On Their Promise, Hyundai Releases 2009 Genesis

Initially introduced to the mass public back in February in the form of two commercials that actually managed to be snarkier then those of their luxury brand competitors, the Hyundai Genesis was touted as the working man’s luxury sedan. True to the projected Summer-2008 release date, the Genesis has been released to the public. Surprisingly, it turns out that upon closer inspection, Hyundai might have actually had a reason to be a little bit supercilious.

Offered with two trim levels, the 3.8 and the 4.6, the Hyundai Genesis shares roughly the same dimensions and luxuries as both the BMW 7-series and the Lexus LS460 - for about 40-grand less. The Genesis 3.8 retails for $32,250 and comes equipped with a 3.8L V6 engine and 290-hp; the 4.6 starts out at $37,250, upgrading the V6 to a V8 and boasting a powerful 368-hp. Standard equipment on both models include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), heated front seats, proximity entry & push-button start, Homelink transceiver, AM/FM/CD/MP3/XM and iPod auxiliary input jacks, and Bluetooth technology. Although admittedly an impressive package, the fact remains that the Genesis is still a Hyundai and thus doesn’t handle quite the way its luxury competitors do.

In a nutshell, the Genesis probably won’t be successful in swaying those consumers looking specifically to buy brands already well-established in the luxury market, but it will offer an almost-too-good-to-be-true option for those looking for more bang for their buck.

2008 Genesis gives Hyundai a 380-hp luxury sedan… What?!

Hyundai Genesis Sedan

If the word streaming out from the HyundaiExchange is any indication Hyundai is looking to break-out strong into the luxury sedan market. Hyundai’s recent emergence into the limelight of the auto industry is not by accident and is not going to fade away. They already have one of the best warranty programs for their new cars and now they are planning to introduce what they hope will be one of the best luxury sedans on the market. The primary means (besides style and quality) by which Hyundai plans to get their Genesis sedan to the top will be with a new 380-hp engine and a lower price than their competitors. (more…)

Four Will Enter, One Will Leave: Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa and Suzuki SX4

Fourhatches

At last week’s media rally, staffers Bill Jackson and Kelsey Mays tried four entry-level cars — the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Suzuki SX4 and Hyundai Accent. Since most people don't rush out and buy four cars, each from a different manufacturer, we thought we'd narrow the field down to an overall winner.

In true beauty-pageant fashion, we'll start with the third runner-up.

Fourth place: 2007 Hyundai Accent SE

Accent

WJ: This was the only manual transmission of the bunch. I found the car prone to understeer. The interior didn't have many of the comfort or convenience features of the other models. The minimalist — some would say Spartan — layout didn't bother me much, but it does suffer when compared to the competition.

KM: To me, the Accent’s simple exterior seemed classier than the overstyled Fit and Versa. Thanks to some performance doodads, the engine in this sport-tuned Accent SE starts loud and turns deafening as you shuffle through the gears. Body roll is minimal, but there was some wheel hop over lateral bumps — accompanied, as one might expect, by lots of noise.

Third place: 2007 Suzuki SX4 base

Sx4

WJ: The tall seating position and high ride of the SX4 said "I'm a sport utility vehicle" quite clearly. It certainly didn't beg to be tossed into corners. The all-wheel-drive system was unobtrusive, and the suspension soaked up bumps very well. I didn't get the use of a metal finish in a couple places on the interior, but controls fell easily into reach.

Cabin_sx4

KM: With excellent visibility and good power starting out, the brand-new SX4 almost took second. What sinks the Suzuki is the driver’s seat, which is narrow and comes with only four adjustments, as well as its poor gas mileage. Credit all-wheel drive, which typically docks a few mpg. With an automatic transmission, the SX4 gets 30 mpg on the highway — significantly less than the Versa’s 36 mpg or the Fit Sport’s 37 mpg.

Which car won the competition? Stay tuned for our next installment.
